5 tips for a healthy skincare routine

We all wish for healthy glowing skin full of life. Checking the ingredients of skincare products makes people often feel like they need special education in biochemistry to make sense of it all. What to take and what to leave? We bring you the five most important tips about ingredients and packaging.

1. Ceramides and useful fatty acids

Ceramides are like cement that hold together the protective wall of skin cells. It ensures that the skin’s protective barrier is long-lasting and keeps the moisture inside. Unfortunately for us, the amount of ceramides in the skin decreases with age. Also, the quantity of polyunsaturated fatty acids that give ceramides elasticity and mobility decreases, they are replaced by saturated fatty acids that create more stiffness.
How to get more high-quality ceramides? Ceramides in beauty products are lipids (fats). They can be either synthetically made, extracted from plants, or in the form of ceramide-rich vegetable oil. LUMI prefers ceramide-rich vegetable oil. Hemp oil has several ceramides and omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (the body cannot produce them). We avoid extra processing of raw materials and energy overuse. Still, the benefits are clear. Ceramides are great for addressing extremely sensitive, extremely dry, or atopic skin.

Most LUMI products have hemp oil in them.

2. Microbiota of balanced skin

Recent studies have shown that millions of bacteria living on the skin`s surface play a huge role in skin health. Microbiota is a common factor. It is the first line of defense against environmental damage. The balance of this ecosystem, which involves active cooperation between our immune system and beneficial bacteria, is crucial for maintaining the health and youth of the skin. Numerous studies have found a direct link between an imbalanced bacterial ecosystem and problematic skin.

How to keep the skin`s microbiota healthy and vital? Firstly, less is more! Maintain an optimal skincare regimen and avoid extremes, too many different products, toxic ingredients, and harsh treatments. For example, do not mechanically exfoliate your skin! Secondly, use hermetically sealed cosmetics in pump bottles – they do not need strong preservatives. Thirdly, avoid products that have fragrances and alcohol in them.

3. AHA-BHA acids, especially lactic acid

Lactic acid helps to maintain hyaluronic acid levels and stimulate collagen and elastin, making the skin more viable and tighter. Lactic acid gently exfoliates the aged skin on the surface layer and rejuvenates the skin giving it an even complexion. Lactic acid helps to maintain the correct, slightly acidic pH level, which is necessary for a balanced skin ecosystem.
It’s important to avoid using AHA-BHA acids excessively! Excessive AHA-BHA exfoliation damages the skin barrier and harms it instead of rebalancing. AHA-BHA must be applied to the skin simultaneously with lipids. That is why we have a mild AHA-BHA content and beneficial omegas in our products.

Try moisturising facial cleansing milk for very mild exfoliation daily, and AHA-BHA cleansing milk for acne-prone skin.

4. Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid binds water molecules – hydrates the skin, and gives elasticity. Mixing hyaluronic acid with water in a laboratory produces a gel-like and very springy consistency. The skin of a child is equally flexible and elastic. Unfortunately, as people get older, their skin loses hyaluronic acid, dries out, and develops wrinkles. Fortunately, it is possible to add more hyaluronic acid with skincare, if the molecules used are of the correct size.
We use hyaluronic acid molecules of various sizes in LUMI products to ensure that hydration is distributed evenly to all layers of the skin. The hyaluronic acid that we add to the product is post-biotic, which means that it is a result of bacterial life activity. 5. Antioxidants

These compounds neutralize free radicals in our tissues. Free radicals are derived from normal body processes, and some perform vital signaling functions. However, environmental factors may intensify the production of radicals: for example, solar radiation, pollution, stress, etc.

Free radicals are like solitary particles that circulate through tissues and seek bonds. It is harmful if they create a bond with vital molecules, such as DNA or collagen (which gives elasticity to the skin) making them break down. Fortunately, our bodies have a pretty effective system that uses antioxidants to control the entire process.

If you want to be sure you have enough antioxidants, it is wise to get them through food and skincare. Vitamins A, C, and E are all effective antioxidants; none is favored over the others. Mixing them works best in skincare.
